Antípodas Lomon Contemporáneo

WORK: Artist residency at Lo Mon Contemporáneo
DATE: 2020
Inés and Cynthia collaborate on graphic and audiovisual design. Plastic arts and the work of light come together in his Antipodes project. Their installation during the Artist Residencies, a graphic-light mural, presents a message that is not profound, but rather thought-provoking: “Here it is tomorrow in New Zealand.” The word, the message as an evocative element, a message to decipher, to reflect upon. During those times of pandemic, the call for responsibility and vigilance within society created a loss of stability in our environment; and at the same time, it made us aware of the planet we live on, prompting a call for globalization as an expression of a phenomenon of planetary change.

The media, information overload, the onslaught of constantly changing data, and a relentless barrage of messages overwhelm our senses and understanding, leading to a more individualistic society. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that the world is a shared space and that all its inhabitants are one. This project seeks a non-place for reflection.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: Oui es vana en jeva landa means “welcome to our land” in the indigenous dialect used by the Māori. The Māori dialect was brought to New Zealand by a Polynesian people believed to have lived in the Tahiti area. If we were to dig a hole in the ground from this exact spot in Hecho until we reached the other side of the Earth, we would emerge in a place called Mahia, located in New Zealand. With this installation, we invite reflection on human behavior as individuals in the face of the current global pandemic (COVID-19): “Today you are here, but tomorrow this place is in New Zealand.”

This installation has two readings: one for daytime and one for nighttime.

If you use ultraviolet flashlights at night, the message you see during the day will transform into something else. This happens exactly 12 hours later.
