Workshop on Light and Color at Museo del Prado

Marcos de mira is a social and educational action project whose objective is to provide vulnerable groups with some keys for a first approach to the world of art. Beyond breaking down the invisible barriers to accessing culture, the project seeks to create spaces for mutual learning that, through dialogue, activate transformative perspectives.

Experimenting in the workshop

Light and color are such powerful elements that they determine how we see the world. Light is a natural element; we could say it’s invisible, but a simple ray of light entering through a window has the capacity to transform a space. Light is knowledge, energy, and life, in contrast to darkness. Color, for its part, is in light, or, put another way, light is color. This activity aims to connect, in an experimental way, the theories of light and color with different works from the Prado Museum’s collection, and thus connect history with our own existence.

We understand how we manipulate and use light and color on a daily basis, but are we aware of how they influence us? Colors and different lighting conditions affect our emotions and allow us to evoke sensations and even memories.

The first session of this activity involves a light experimentation workshop, exploring the concepts of light, shadow, and darkness, as well as the processes of light decomposition and tinting using various spotlights, filters, and flashlights. Following several aesthetic walks that delve into the concepts of light and color in the Museum’s artworks, the participating group creates an ephemeral installation that redefines the museum space through light and color.
