MISSION REGION
WORK: Audiovisual mural created for the entrance of the “Mision Región” exhibition
CLIENT: Dirección General de Patrimonio Cultural de la Comunidad de Madrid
DATE: 2023
ABOUT: This audiovisual mural was commissioned for the entrance of the “Mission Region” exhibition. It aims to explain the evolution of photographic missions throughout history by selecting the most important ones.
179 municipalities, 17 female photographers and 16 male photographers
During the first half of 2022, 17 female photographers and 16 male photographers traveled throughout the Community of Madrid with the goal of creating a large archive of photographs of the Madrid landscape from a heritage perspective.
199 areas were defined within the region: 178 municipalities and 21 districts of the city of Madrid, to ensure the most accurate representation possible of Madrid’s diverse landscape. Each photographer would be in charge of six locations, with each area being equally represented by 10 snapshots, forming a photographic collection of 1990 images that have become part of the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid, thus enriching the heritage of the region at the service of all citizens.
Misión Región: a unique project on the value of the landscape as heritage
Misión Región has been an unprecedented project, not only for the number of photographers involved, but also for its heritage perspective; seeking a contemporary vision of the landscape that goes beyond geographical or aesthetic features, viewing it instead as a testament to social customs and economic structures, passed-down traditions and trends, uneven urban development and the advance of rural depopulation, among many other realities. Misión Región is a current portrait of how we understand and relate to the world, forming a series of spaces with their own distinct identity.
This project features the artistic direction of Paco Gómez, the scientific direction of Mónica Luengo, and the technical direction of David Rejano.
